Ottawa police are investigating a video posted to YouTube on Saturday, showing a man threatening what appears to be an Uber driver and passenger.
“If I see you again you are dead meat,” says the dark-haired man in the video, leaning towards what appears to be a driver’s side window, towards another man seated at the wheel of a car. “Go follow the law and get a real job. I’m not joking with you. I’m not joking with you.”
Ottawa Police Service Chief Charles Bordeleau said on Twitter early Sunday morning that police are investigating the incident, in response to a media question about the video.
On Sunday, police confirmed the investigation and added the video was brought to their attention by a third-party.
Over 130,000 views of the one-minute, 21-second-long video were logged by 11 a.m. Sunday morning on YouTube.
It appears to have been shot by the driver just outside the front doors of the Fairmont Château Laurier in downtown Ottawa, a block from the Parliament Buildings.
In the video, the altercation becomes more heated when an unseen passenger in the backseat of the car suggests the initial man should find a “real f***king argument.”
This prompts the dark-haired man, who is seen wearing a black shirt, cuffed jeans and a blue jean jacket, to open the passenger door and suggest the passenger get out and talk to him “like a man.”
The passenger and driver both stay in the car during the exchange.
“Take a real taxi you f***ing cheapskate,” says the dark-haired man, as a woman intercedes in what appear to be efforts to calm him down. At that point, the car leaves.
Police said those in the video had not yet been identified.
There has been ongoing strife between cabbies and Uber drivers in Ottawa as the ride-sharing app has gained popularity. At the same time some taxi drivers have been protesting removal of exclusive airport pick-up arrangements and increased dispatch fees.
