A violent lightening storm that blew through the city on Sunday forced the emergency cancellation of the Ottawa Humane Society’s Wiggle Waggle Walkathon, causing a major fundraising gap for the society.
The walk and run event is the OHS’s largest fundraising event of the year. Through participant registrations, online fundraising and donations at the event, they were counting on more than $250,000 to help the more than 10,000 animals annually.
However, with the emergency cancellation they raised only about half the money, which is used to save animals from abuse and neglect, to rescue dogs from hot cars, treat animals in need of life-saving medical care, and find homes for homeless pets.
There are currently 750 animals in OHS care. To help with the shortfall, donations can be made through the OHS website at www.ottawahumane.ca
