It didn’t look right to police that a car was crawling slowly through Aylmer with its lights turned off at 3 a.m. Tuesday. And when officers pulled up for a closer look, the car took off fast.

The chase didn’t last long, Gatineau police say. The driver tried some high-speed maneuvering and smashed up his car so badly that he had to jump out and try to run away.

Police grabbed the 27-year-old man after a short chase.

The officers had been patrolling the area of Victor Beaudry Street after receiving complaints that someone was breaking into cars there.

When they arrested the man, they found the Mazda 3 he had crashed was stolen. He had sneaked into a home through an unlocked patio door and stolen the keys a short time before.

The suspect has no fixed address. He is charged with theft of the car, another theft charge, driving while his licence is suspended, and breach of probation.

Gatineau police are urging people to lock their doors at all times.
