The city is to extend Canada goose population control measures to four parks along the Rideau River.

Rideau-Vanier Coun. Mathieu Fleury requested a biologist’s review of Riverain, Bordeleau, Kingsview and King Edward parks. The review found that all the parks were populated with geese and contained goose droppings.

The Rideau River parks were not part of a 2015 project aimed at controlling the population of geese. Expanding the project would include four measures: planting shrubs; sterilizing eggs by “addling” or shaking them so they don’t hatch; “hazing” the geese with dogs and new signs that warn people not to the feed the geese.

The measures would add about $21,600 to the cost of the program this year and about $48,000 next year.

Coun. Keith Egli asked whether there was a low-cost way to address the issue, such as allowing the public to bring in dogs. City staff responded that a variance would be needed because the dogs would not be leashed.

Canada geese aren’t native to the Ottawa area, but their feces present a public health issue. Canada geese thrive on grass found in parks and people also feed them bread. Geese can produce between 150 and 900 grams of feces a day, which can carry E. coli and salmonella.
