Taxi drivers slowed traffic to a crawl again on Thursday as they marched along the Airport Parkway to protest increased fees to pick up passengers at the airport.

As the labour dispute entered its second month, Unifor, the union representing taxi drivers, appealed in an open letter for provincial arbitration.

The protests began last month after the airport taxi drivers’ employer, Coventry Connections, announced increased fees to pick up passengers at the terminal.

The drivers, who now have to pay $4.50 per ride to Coventry Connections, used to be charged a monthly flat rate of $345, which the union said worked out to about $1.50 per ride.

Airport taxi drivers say the new fee is unacceptable when drivers are already losing money to Uber, the online app that markets itself as a ride-share company.

The union says it plans to stage another protest noon on Friday at city hall.
