The older brother of Terry Fox brought a message of hope Friday to two Ottawa elementary schools as the city geared up for the annual run to raise money for cancer research.

Fred Fox told students at Roberta Bondar Public School and Dunlop Public School about his brother’s dedication to eradicating cancer.

“He was ordinary, but did an extraordinary thing,” Fox said.

It’s been 35 years since Terry Fox, who had been diagnosed with bone cancer, ran 5,373 kilometres in 143 days to highlight the importance of cancer research.

He was forced to end his run on Sept. 1, 1980 when the cancer spread to his lungs.

The Terry Fox Foundation hopes to raise $35 million this year in honour of the 35th anniversary of the run.
