The 11-year-old boy who escaped his Kanata basement in February 2013 took the stand for a third day at his parents’ child-torture trial on Friday, recounting disturbing punishments inflicted by his father designed to “get rid of my demons.”

The boy, now 13, detailed horrifying abuse, including starvation and torture, and told the court he thought he was going to die. He recalled the day his father, an RCMP officer who has since been suspended without pay, pointed his handgun at his head.

“I was scared he was going to kill me,” the boy told a hushed courtroom.

The boy also recalled for the court the time his father filled the bathtub with ice and cold water, and held him under until he ran out of breath. The boy said he was being punished for something called “lust,” a word he said he didn’t understand.

The boy said he was handcuffed behind his back, naked, and chained to a post in the basement for months while the rest of his family went about their daily routine upstairs. He said his father had covered the basement windows and would sometimes place a cardboard box over the emaciated boy’s head, saying “he didn’t want me to see the light” and wanted him to feel like he was in jail.

The boy said his father only went down to the basement to “either feed or beat him.” His father would let him take only cold showers.

“He said, ‘We don’t want to waste the hot water on you,’ ” the boy told the court.

The boy’s meals were rationed and he was fed only peanut butter, bread and water. He recalled once his father left him with a full jar of peanut butter and some pita bread. “He said, ‘This should last you weeks.’ ”

He also said his father used a video camera to monitor him “24/7” and videotaped disturbing interrogations of his shackled and naked son, forcing him to confess so-called sins such as kissing a girl up in a tree. The videos, seized from the father’s cellphone, were shown in court.

The boy testified that he screamed when his father burned him with a barbecue lighter.

“Did your stepmom come down?” prosecutor Marie Dufort asked.

“Nope,” the boy replied.

“What were his reasons for beating you?” the prosecutor asked.

“He said I was a horrible child.”

The boy had been trying to get away from the house for a month. He said his father had once caught him trying to escape and he “was chained up twice as hard. He covered me in chains.”

The boy finally wriggled an ankle from a loosened shackle.

“I was terrified, hungry and thirsty. I couldn’t take it anymore. My entertainment was (staring at) a wall and I was just getting hurt and burned. I was scared to death.”

His father and stepmother are on trial for aggravated assault, forcible confinement and failure to provide necessities of life. The boy’s father is also charged with aggravated sexual assault.

His father has confessed to chaining up his son and burning him with a barbecue lighter. He’s also confessed to hitting him so hard his son was left with a broken tooth. His stepmom has told police that she had no control over the horrific abuse.

The trial continues Monday and the boy is scheduled to be cross-examined by defence lawyers.
