Another day, another pothole in Ottawa’s summer of taxi labour disputes.
Drivers for Capital Taxi rejected a proposed deal with their employer Sunday evening even though their bargaining committee had recommended accepting it.
But the drivers are still on the road, and the company says passengers are unlikely to notice any change in service.
“What’s strange about this is that virtually all the drivers are working,” said Hanif Patni, president of Coventry Connections, the city’s biggest taxi company. Coventry owns some fleets, such as Blue Line, and provides dispatch and financial services for Capital, which is family-owned.
In late August, Capital had cut off dispatch service to 76 of 306 cars after those drivers didn’t pay the monthly fee for the service. But Patni said they have all caught up on payments and the dispatching is back to normal.
The latest step means Airport Taxi’s dispute continues with drivers locked out, Blue Line has settled with its drivers, Capital is still without a collective agreement, and Westway Taxi drivers’ collective agreement will expire next month.
“It’s never-ending. The saga continues,” Patni said.
