Ontario Progressive Conservative Leader Patrick Brown had some words of advice for Premier Kathleen Wynne Monday: keep out of the federal election.
“Being premier is a full-time job. It is not a part-time job. She has been disappearing a lot for the purposes of partisan campaigning.”
Brown, who was in Ottawa touring the Heart Institute, said Wynne cancelled a keynote speech at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario to attend a rally for federal Liberal leader Justin Trudeau.
“I think the premier’s job is to work with whoever gets elected in Ottawa,” Brown said.
Brown, a former federal Conservative MP who recently won a byelection in Simcoe North giving him a seat in the Ontario Legislature, has been touring hospitals around the province. Hospital cuts, he said, are a growing concern.
“We are hoping as a PC team to highlight examples of how a cut of $54 million province wide with an aging population is putting pressures on the health system. It affects every community and every city, and the more hospitals we tour the more examples we see.”
The Heart Institute, he said, is “doing a very good job with the budget they have been given, but the reality is their budget got cut by $3 million last year.”
That cut, he said, is forcing the Heart Institute to do more with less.
“You’ve got more patients, you’ve got a stress we are seeing on every hospital, and it begs the question: What are this government’s priorities?”
Brown said “economic mismanagement” by the Liberal government is taking its toll on health and education.
