Ottawa’s top municipal official, city manager Kent Kirkpatrick, is stepping down, Mayor Jim Watson told council members Wednesday.

Kirkpatrick’s decision to not seek an extension of his contract had been largely expected. A senior city official since amalgamation in 2001 and city manager since 2004, Kirkpatrick, 53, has multiple sclerosis and has had to contend with worsening symptoms of the degenerative disease.

“We very much wanted Mr. Kirkpatrick to stay on. He has done a remarkable job for us,” said Watson, adding that he understood the manager’s need to put his health first.

The city will now search for a new manager for the $3-billion-a-year organization.

Kirkpatrick was treasurer of Ottawa-Carleton’s regional government before the amalgamation of 11 municipalities into a single City of Ottawa.

He also brought to the role 12 years of experience as a municipal councillor in Carleton Place, the town where he was raised.
