With the number of first-time users up 28 per cent since 2013, the Ottawa Food Bank Tuesday held its first-ever Harvest Breakfast fundraiser Thursday as part of Hunger Awareness Week.

“With more and more people turning to food banks for the first time, it’s important for them, and all food bank clients, to stay healthy so they can take the steps necessary to get beyond hunger,” said the organization’s executive director Michael Maidment.

Some 200 people attended the breakfast — which cost $450 for a table of 10 — at the Shaw Conference Centre. The audience included city councillors, and members of the Ottawa Police Services, Rainbow Foods and the Ottawa Muslim Association.

The funds are intended to help ensure the agency to ensure families receive good quality food through the winter months.

The Food Bank works to ensure about 47 per cent of the food it distributes is fresh and the new initiative will supplement the fresh fruit and vegetables grown on a nearby farm on donated land to supply its 140 member agencies across the city.

Ottawa Public Health was on hand to release its 2015 annual Nutritious Food Basket Survey.

Sherry Nigro, manager of health promotion and disease prevention, said that the cost of basic healthy eating for and average Ottawa family of four is at least $835 per month.

“This cost does not include such things as toiletries and cleaning supplies — items commonly included within a family’s grocery bill,” said Nigro.
