French-speaking students at the the University of Ottawa will get better service and access to more classes now that the university has been recognized by the province as an official provider of French-language services.
The university announced the designation on Friday, Franco-Ontarian Day.
Although the university already provides programs in French at the undergraduate and graduate levels, the new designation under Ontario’s French-language Services Act makes those courses and services a legal requirement.
University of Ottawa and Laurentian University in Sudbury are Ontario’s only officially designated bilingual universities. Some 11,500 students at the university are francophone, representing more than one-quarter of the school’s total enrolment of 40,000.
The French-language programs it provides include studies in law, social science, education, business, health and medicine and some engineering programs.
The new designation takes effect on Jan. 1.
