This just in!
In what the New Democratic Party has — with tongue completely buried in cheek — dubbed a “shocking development,” former NDP leader and party icon Ed Broadbent has officially jumped down off the fence to back Paul Dewar, who’s looking for re-election in Ottawa Centre.
“I’m a proud New Democrat, so I know it’s surprising that I would endorse the NDP candidate,” a party release quotes Broadbent as saying. “But I know everyone cares what retired politicians think, so I felt it was important to make a post-comeback comeback to endorse Paul.”
“I am honoured and flattered to receive this endorsement, which is obviously big news,” Dewar said with apparent humility. “There really is nothing more unexpected than getting the support of the strongest partisans from your own party.”
In a somewhat related development, former prime minister Jean Chrétien officially endorsed Ottawa Centre Liberal candidate Catherine McKenna at a campaign rally at a campaign HQ BBQ Saturday.
Finally, as the Dewar campaign points out: Brian Mulroney has not (yet) endorsed Ottawa Centre Conservative candidate Damian Konstantinakos.
