Singing along to the anti-Stephen Harper protest song “Harperman,” about 100 people demonstrating as part of the countrywide We Can Do Better coalition, gathered on the steps of Parliament Hill Saturday afternoon to urge Canadians to get out and vote for change.
Jessica Squires, on the executive of Canadian Association of Professional Employees (CAPE), stressed to the crowd that the coalition’s work will extend well beyond the Oct. 19 vote.
“It’s not just who we vote for, it’s about what we do between elections to keep pressure on our elected representatives,” Squires told the Citizen.
“It’s to make a connection between the election and the everyday impact of social policies on peoples’ lives,” she said.
Dylan Penner, a democracy campaigner for The Council of Canadians, said the coalition is urging people to “vote for change.”
“We’re standing up for democracy, not voter suppression laws like the unfair elections act,” said Penner, whose grandfather, Jacob Penner, was a lead organizer of the Winnipeg General Strike in 1919.
After the rally, the We Can Do Better coalition protesters hit the ByWard Market to give out leaflets on how to get registered to vote in the upcoming federal election.
