They continue to run and ride to the the national capital to make sure the country’s fallen officers are not forgotten.
The National Peace Officers’ Memorial Run to Remember arrived in Ottawa on Saturday after a 460-kilometre relay that began on Thursday at the Ontario Police Memorial site in Toronto. The runners’ arrival coincided with the conclusion of the 640-kilometre Canadian Police Memorial Ride to Remember, which started at the Ontario Police College in Aylmer, Ont., and also finished at the National Memorial on Parliament Hill.
The run, which began in 2005, and the ride, which first took place in 2000, have been companion events since 2011. Together, they help raise awareness about the annual Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial Service on the last Sunday of September in Ottawa.
Money raised through the run also supports several initiatives, including trust funds established for the families of officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
This year’s memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday at Parliament Hill.
