Banners and signs used to promote Canada’s upcoming sesquicentennial in 2017 could soon be emblazoned with corporate logos — in contravention to a decision council made earlier this year.
Celebrations Ottawa, the not-for-profit corporation created to coordinate the year-long party in honour of the 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation, will ask the finance committee next week for permission to slap up to five corporate logos on its signs and banners.
Including logos is a key component of the organization’s ability to raise $10 million in sponsorship funds from the private sector, according to a staff report.
“At this level of partnership, and given the investments at stake, national partners expect to be integrated in Ottawa 2017 signage and banners,” the report says.
It goes on to add that corporate donations will be instrumental in delivering an “outstanding year-long program that will delight residents and attract an additional 1.75 million visitors to Ottawa, which will impact the local economy by creating jobs and benefitting businesses.”
That may be the case, but a motion approved by council in January specifically noted that Ottawa 2017 signage could not include any sponsorship information or commercial advertising.
If the finance committee, and ultimately council, can be persuaded to change its mind, the signs and banners could include up to five corporate logos — one lead partner and four major sponsors.
The banners and signs would be completed with a “high degree of design and care put into the placement of the logos,” the staff report promises.
Logos would also be included on all Ottawa 2017 promotional items, such as the website, web application, tickets and other items.
The city has committed to contributing close to $6 million toward Ottawa 2017, while the Ottawa Gatineau Hotel Association has pledged $2.5 million and the Ottawa Senators $500,000.
