Former long-time city councillor and MPP Alex Cullen won’t be allowed to run in the next city election after failing to properly file his campaign expenses for the 2014 municipal race.
City clerk Rick O’Connor notified Mayor Jim Watson and council Tuesday of the “notice of default”, saying the one-time Bay ward councillor had “failed to comply” with legal requirements in relation to filing a financial statement reflecting his campaign finances in last year’s election.
Cullen said he simply forgot to comply because he was consumed by his efforts on behalf of the New Democratic Party during the federal election. He also ran — unsuccessfully — for the NDP nomination in Ottawa West-Nepean.
“I had filed my 2014 municipal election contributions and expenses report with the city at the appropriate time, and had asked for an extension in order to reduce my deficit,” Cullen wrote in an email.
“Unfortunately, the federal election has absorbed my time since Aug. 2 when it was called — I am working for the NDP — and I forgot about the subsequent filing deadline. Nothing material had changed with regard to my original election report.”
Cullen has been a fixture in Ottawa’s political scene for more than 30 years, holding office at either the municipal or provincial level. He is possibly best known locally for his time as the Bay ward councillor from 2000 to 2010. In 2010, he tried for the mayor’s chair, but dropped out citing a lack of money.
Cullen ran unsuccessfully in both the provincial and municipal elections in 2014.
