Giant Tiger Stores Ltd. will close its main distribution centre in Ottawa and open a new, larger centre 80 kilometres south at Highway 401, the Ottawa-based retail chain said Wednesday.

The closing of the Walkley Road centre will mean the loss of 300 full- and part-time jobs, but the retailer said it hopes employees will choose to relocate to the new centre, expected to open in 2017 in the Johnstown Industrial Park on the St. Lawrence River east of Prescott.

Thomas Haig, named president and chief executive of Giant Tiger last March, said the site was chosen for its proximity to the chain’s store base, access to highways 401 and 416 and room to expand.

“It was also attractive in terms of proximity for our existing workforce and the pleasant lifestyle available to those wishing to relocate to the area,” Haig said in a release.

With a focus on discount clothing, food and other items, Giant Tiger has more than 200 outlets across Canada and continues to expand despite retail pressures that led to the departure of mass-marketers Zellers and Target Canada.

The privately held company began with a single ByWard Market store in 1961. The chain will remain headquartered in Ottawa, a spokeswoman said.

The 401 corridor through eastern Ontario has become a favourite location for warehouse centres, some owned directly by retailers including Walmart and others operated by third-party logistics firms.
