Drivers might want to back off the accelerator pedal in Gatineau after Oct. 19, when 21 new sites will come under photo radar and other camera scrutiny.
The only permanent surveillance spot will be at the bustling intersection of Maisonneuve and Sacré-Coeur boulevards, where new equipment will monitor both speeding and red light infractions.
The remainder of the sites will deploy on a rotating basis four photo radar machines provided to the city by the province.
Police Chief Mario Harel said funds generated by tickets will be used to help pay for the equipment. Once that cost is covered, the money goes into a provincial fund that is split between Quebec and the municipalities involved.
The zones under surveillance will be clearly marked, officials said, except for school zones, which will be monitored on a random basis with no warning.
