Rene Goudreau knew that his mother, who suffered from multiple sclerosis, wouldn’t be able to get out of bed on her own when he intentionally set a fire in the room of her Bayshore area apartment, a prosecutor alleged Thursday.

In her opening statement at Goudreau’s first-degree murder trial, Lisa Miles told the jury that Lucie Goudreau, 53, died in her bed, alone and trapped as a result of the Nov. 27, 2012 fire.

Miles alleged that Goudreau crawled over his mother in her bed to escape from the window after the fire was set.

“She didn’t understand me,” Miles told the jury Goudreau allegedly said to bystanders in the lobby shortly after the fire started. “I did it because I had to. I needed the money.”

Goudreau has pleaded not guilty. On Thursday, he talked over much of the crown’s opening statement, defending himself against the allegations.

The jury was told that Goudreau moved into the apartment at 90 Woodridge Cr. in 1984 with his mother and father, four years after his parents were married.

When Goudreau’s mother was in her 30s, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Over time, the disease attacked her body and was forced to use a cane to walk, then a walker and eventually a wheelchair, the Crown said. She became more and more dependant on others, including her son, court heard.

After her husband died from cancer in 2010, Goudreau moved back in with her. Her personal support worker was fired and she relied on her son for help, according to the Crown.

When Goudreau didn’t take his medication, he was out of control, the prosecution alleged.

The trial continues Thursday.
