Wynne should go back to her day job instead of stumping for Trudeau

Well, here’s a surprise.

The Liberal premier of Ontario is supporting the Liberal candidate who’d like Stephen Harper’s job as prime minister of Canada.

Yes, that’s right. Kathleen Wynne, having backed away from the campaign trail while awkward topics such as the OPP laying charges in the Sudbury byelection scandal were hot, is now back stumping for Justin Trudeau.

That would be fine if she were doing it on her own time.

She isn’t.

She made the statement at a speech to the Empire Club Monday. The event was listed on the premier’s public itinerary — not on the letterhead of the Liberal Party as, strictly speaking, it should have been.

She said she believes the federal Liberal party will create the jobs and economic climate Canada needs.

“You will not be surprised to hear that’s why I hope that, on Oct. 19, the province that embraced me and my party last year will support Justin Trudeau’s Liberal party and their clear plan to deliver the national leadership we need,” she said.

She reiterated that statement afterwards to reporters.

That really pushes partisan politics over the top.

The job of running this province should be a full-time one. We have elementary teachers in the midst of a job action that has seen children losing precious programs in their schools. In Halton, there was news that schools may stay unlocked because school secretaries are refusing to monitor doors.

We’ve got the province selling off a vital strategic asset — Hydro One — at fire sale prices. Yet Wynne’s key message was that Trudeau would make the best prime minister because Harper won’t talk to her.

Oh, but by the way, she does like the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) deal that Harper and his government negotiated.

So which one is it?

Stephen Harper is a terrible prime minister because he won’t talk to her? Or, Stephen Harper is a great prime minister because he just negotiated a landmark trade deal? Not only was it a good deal, Canada actually walked away from it smiling. Whoever negotiated it got a very good deal for this country.

Wynne was attacking Harper over his opposition to the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan (ORPP). Harper opposes it because his government sees it as an onerous payroll tax on employers at a time when they can least afford it.

Chambers of commerce across the province and hundreds of employers have expressed similar concerns about the ORPP, but those have been swept aside by a premier who’s sticking to her “We know best” line.

She was asked by a reporter what it is in Thomas Mulcair’s platform that she can’t go along with, and she seemed momentarily flummoxed.

Well, it’s Mulcair’s opposition to the TPP agreement that has her supporting Trudeau. So she doesn’t like Mulcair because he doesn’t like Harper’s policy. So the enemy of my enemy is still my enemy?

“I understand what he has said he would throw out the TPP agreement. That’s not realistic,” she said.

Mulcair’s plan, Wynne said, was “not realistic.”

More accurately, Mulcair’s plan is not a Liberal plan.

PC Leader Patrick Brown says it’s inappropriate for Wynne to be stumping for Trudeau.

“I think it’s a full-time job creating prosperity in Ontario and quite frankly, I think she’s just doing this as a distraction,” he said.

“It’s easier to pick a fight with the prime minister on the payroll tax than explain why 57 chambers of commerce, and 150 major employers in Ontario don’t like her policies,” added Brown.

“It’s a distraction from the four OPP investigations and the one that has led to charges; this is a distraction to her own reckless energy policy and it’s a distraction to this Hydro One fire sale.”

I think Wynne should to back to her day job and let Trudeau fight for his own job.

Surely if he’s ready to govern, she can take off his training wheels?
