Ottawa police are seeking public assistance in tracking down a hapless robber who was videoed trying frantically to escape a locked pharmacy before fleeing with a batch of narcotics he had stolen.

The robbery occurred just before 3 p.m. on Sept. 25 when a man entered a drugstore in the 2500 block of Baseline Road near Pinecrest Road.

He walked straight to the pharmacist’s counter and demanded narcotics. The pharmacist handed the drugs over and the robber placed them in a black plastic bag he brought.

That’s when the heist went off the rails.

The suspect dashed toward the front door, which had been locked, apparently by an employee.

In-store cameras captured the increasingly panicked suspect dashing up and down corridors, eventually ending up in a backroom, where he tries to flee through the ceiling.

He disappears from view, only to come crashing down and bouncing off the office furniture.

The video does not show his escape, but witnesses say he crashed through a front window and fled toward 1300 block of Pinecrest, where he was seen jumping into a beige pickup truck.

He was apparently not injured in the mad scramble and there were no other injuries to staff or anyone in the pharmacy.

The suspect is described as Caucasian, 30-35 years old, with a lean build. As seen in the video he was wearing a hooded sweatshirt, sunglasses, gloves, jeans and sneakers.

Robbery unit Staff Sgt. Mike Haarbosch said the squad has seen 22 pharmacy robberies so far this year.

“This is double the tally at this time last year,” he said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the robbery unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 5116. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477 or by downloading the Ottawa police iOS app.
