Organizers of Max Keeping’s memorial service just needed to find a place with room for family and close friends.

That’s right — it’s have to be held at the biggest arena in Eastern Ontario.

Plus, for those who cannot get to the Canadian Tire Centre at noon Tuesday, the event will be shown live on CTV Ottawa, longtime home to the immensely popular broadcaster and backer of good causes, and live-streamed on the website of the Ottawa Senators, the team that counted Keeping as both major fan and prime mover behind its charitable foundation.

Patrick McGarry of the Hulse, Playfair and McGarry funeral firm said the Senators organization “basically opened their arms” to the idea of holding the service, or “celebration of life,” at the Kanata arena. Keeping, 73, died of cancer on Oct. 1.

“They just felt it would be appropriate in many ways — and perhaps the right size for a celebration of Max’s life,” McGarry said.

Seats will be set up on the arena floor for family and invited guests, and the stands will be open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. Programs will be provided to all.

TSN sportscaster James Duthie, who worked with Keeping at the station then known as CJOH Ottawa, will be master of ceremonies. Speakers will include Keeping’s son, Shane Holley, granddaughter Lisa Meikle-Sigouin, Mayor Jim Watson and Rabbi Reuven Bulka.

The arena has been the site of a memorial service before. In 2010, more than 5,600 people came to what was then Scotiabank Place to remember Daron Richardson, the 14-year-old daughter of Senators assistant coach Luke Richardson who took her own life. The gathering helped serve as a springboard for the Do It For Daron movement that supports the early identification and treatment of young people with mental illness.

Keeping’s friend Dave Ready, who also will speak at Tuesday’s memorial, said the event will be less about mourning and more about honouring the enthusiasm and commitment Keeping brought to a lifetime of causes.

“It’s really simply a celebration of life, with people directly speaking about his contributions to the community … the way and manner in which he lived his life and supported the community.”
