The charitable arm of the Toronto Blue Jays has donated $150,000 to upgrade the baseball park in Chelsea, where catcher Russell Martin lived as a child.

Martin’s time in Chelsea — it lasted about two years, a spokeswoman for the municipality thinks — isn’t the reason for the grant. The Jays Care Foundation gave more than $1.4 million this year to upgrade eight amateur baseball fields in Canada.

Chelsea applied for funds and got them, with Martin playing no role.

Marjorie Boies, an information officer for Chelsea, said the work will go ahead next spring, with the town of Chelsea itself paying $91,000. The plan is to level the field, improve the drainage and rebuild the fencing.

And if the project gets money from the Quebec government as well it will also upgrade the lighting, dugouts and bleachers.

“Baseball has the power to create lasting social change for children and youth,” says a statement from the Jays Care Foundation.

“The Municipality of Chelsea has a proud baseball tradition and our investment will help ensure this legacy continues to grow.”

The park is on Old Chelsea Road east of Highway 5. Martin was born in Toronto but after his parents separated he spent time with his father in Montreal and mother in Chelsea.
