A Renfrew man who has gained a following with his daily duck adventures on YouTube is raising money to process his 650 ducks into meat to feed Toronto’s homeless.
“I had this crazy idea that I wanted to raise 1,000 ducks and I wanted to do it on YouTube,” said Matt McDougall.
But he wanted a purpose for raising that many ducks so he decided to donate the meat to a shelter in Toronto.
The feed company McDougall had purchased from in the past had initially agreed to supply the food but backed out 10 days before the ducklings were to hatch.
When other feed companies refused to sponsor the duck adventure, McDougall decided to start this GoFundMe page.
McDougall’s feed the ducks campaign has already raised $10,000, a large amount of the money coming from his almost 20,000 YouTube followers.
The campaign has fallen about $5,000 shy of the cost to process the ducks on Oct. 22 and deliver the meat to a Toronto homeless shelter. McDougall said he tried to pitch the idea to an Ottawa shelter but it wouldn’t go for it.
