A motorcyclist caught travelling at more than 2½ times the speed limit in rural west Quebec faces a $2,150 fine, police said Tuesday.

The rider, a 31-year-old man from Mirabel, Que., was clocked at more than 230 km/h Monday afternoon on a 90 km/h stretch of Route 323 at Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix north of Montebello, the Sûreté du Québec said. Along with the fine, the man was given 36 demerit points and his licence was suspended for 30 days.

His speed on the two-lane road, the equivalent of 143 m.p.h., could be the highest recorded by area police forces. The previous reported record was 220 km/h by the driver of a BMW car eventually stopped by Ontario Provincial Police on Highway 417 near Russell in September 2014.

A second motorcyclist was recorded at 190 km/h Monday in the same area on Route 323, Quebec police said. The 37-year-old operator was fined $1,523 and given a seven-day licence suspension and 24 demerit points.

And earlier Monday, a 41-year-old man from Gatineau was given an $1,163 fine plus 14 demerit points and a seven-day suspension for driving a car at 170 km/h in a 100-km/h zone on Highway 5.
