‘Faith healers’ who prayed for dying son instead of getting medical help jailed

A couple who decided to pray over their dying newborn instead of seeking medical help have been told they’ll have to serve their six year jail sentences.
Dale and Shannon Hickman had fought their 2011 convictions for second-degree manslaughter but their appeal was dismissed by Oregon Supreme Court last week.
The couple, both 30, chose to say prayers and rub olive oil on their son David in 2009 shortly after he was born two months premature at home.
He had got into difficulties and eventually died from staphylococcus pneumonia nine hours later.
The court was told he would have lived if the couple had contacted emergency services.

‘As the evidence unfolded and the witnesses testified, it became evident to me and certainly to the jury … that this death just simply did not need to occur,’ judge Robert Herndon said.
Prosecutor Mike Regan added a message had to be shown to the Followers of Christ Church, which the couple belonged to.
The religious organisation is known to prefer faith cures over medical treatments.

Regan said: ‘These generally are good, decent, law-abiding folks, except in this one narrow area of their lives.
‘They have told us stubbornly – and arrogantly, if I may – that ‘We are not going to change.’
‘The law of civil society demands that they change.
‘It demands that we sent a message to all of them that whether you believe this or not in Oregon, you cannot act upon that belief.’
