A Gatineau man was arrested on drug charges and driving offences following a short but high-speed chase through Gatineau’s Aylmer district early Sunday.

Police said the incident began when police stopped a vehicle at about 1 a.m. on the Aylmer Road for a traffic offence. While questioning the driver, police say the officer spotted what appeared to be an unspecified quantity of drugs inside the car.

When asked to get out of the car, the driver sped off.

Police chased the suspect up to the Impasse John-Roney area, where the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. He was arrested a short time later on Boulevard Des Allumettières.

A search of the vehicle found small amounts of marijuana and cocaine and he was charged with possession of drugs and breach of undertaking.

He was also charged $1,163 and 14 demerit points for driving over 120 km/h in a 50 km/h zone during the chase. The man’s drivers licence was suspended and his vehicle has been impounded.

The man, 18, was released by police on a promise to appear in court at a later date.
