The National War Memorial in Ottawa will be the site Thursday for a remembrance of two soldiers who were killed last year by individuals supportive of Islamic extremism.

Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18 fighter jets will conduct a fly-past and wreaths will be laid at the memorial to remember Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent.

Cirillo, a 24-year old reservist from Hamilton, was gunned down Oct. 22 last year at the War Memorial while serving as an honour guard. The gunman, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, then rushed to Parliament Hill, where he was killed in a gun battle.

Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, 53, died just days before after being deliberately struck by a vehicle in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que. The driver was shot to death by police.

The ceremony will involve a 200-person marching contingent of military members and first responders, the CF-18 flyby, a 21-gun salute by four Canadian Forces howitzers, the laying of wreaths and a speech by Governor General David Johnston.

Officials with the Canadian Forces and the governor general’s office declined to provide details of the Thursday event, noting that they are still being finalized.

But the families of Vincent and Cirillo are expected to attend, government sources say. Prime Minister Stephen Harper will also attending the ceremony, along with others such as Veterans Affairs Minister Erin O’Toole, Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jon Vance and RCMP commissioner Bob Paulson.

Members of the public who came to the aid of Cpl. Cirillo have also been invited. Wreathes will be laid by Johnston and Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson.

The marching contingent is expected to arrive at the National War Memorial at 10:35 a.m. It will include members of The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada (Princess Louise’s), the unit in which Cirillo served.

The marching contingent will also include around 50 Royal Canadian Air Force members in honour of Vincent as he was a RCAF firefighter.

About half of the contingent will be made up of first responders from Ottawa Police Service, Ottawa Paramedics, Ottawa Fire Service, Ontario Provincial Police, Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Parliamentary Precinct Guards. Organizers say this is to honour first responders who played a crucial role in the response to the attack by Zehaf-Bibeau.

The four CF-18s from Bagotville, Que., will fly in formation above the National War Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, during which time one aircraft will leave the group in memory of the fallen soldiers.

The ceremony is expected to end shortly before noon.

In addition, on Tuesday the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 79 in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu will be holding a ceremony to commemorate Vincent’s death.

On Wednesday, The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada will conduct a memorial parade for Cirillo in Hamilton.

A remembrance ceremony and mass for Cirillo will also be held by the Italian community of Ottawa on Sunday. The mass will at St. Anthony’s Church and there will also be a procession and laying of wreaths.
