One rides a scooter to work and competes in ultra marathons, the other was captain of her varsity swim team and now trains with a local club.
One campaigned tirelessly to unseat Ottawa Centre’s three-term New Democrat MP Paul Dewar, the other once worked in Dewar’s Parliament Hill office.
One is vice-chair of the city’s transportation committee, the other has advised Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau on foreign affairs.
And both will probably be mistaken for the other more than once in the next few years (it’s happened already).
Here’s a guide to help tell the difference between Catherine McKenney and Catherine McKenna.
Hometown
Catherine McKenney
Fort Coulonge, Que.
Catherine McKenna
Hamilton, Ont.
Areas they represent
Catherine McKenney
As the city councillor for Somerset ward, her domain is, roughly speaking, bordered by the O-Train tracks to the west, the Ottawa River to the north, the Rideau Canal to the east and Highway 417 to the south (though the ward also includes the parts of Little Italy that are south of the highway). About 35,000 people live here, according to the 2011 census.
Catherine McKenna
As Member of Parliament, her domain is much larger. It includes all of Somerset and Kitchissippi wards, as well as portions of Capital and River. The 2011 census pegged the total population at about 113,000.
How they can (potentially) help you
Catherine McKenney
Catherine McKenney can help you with your green bin.
Busted green bin? Wonky snow removal on your street? Chronically late (or early) OC Transpo buses? All good reasons to call your city councillor.
Building permits, parking, public health, water and sewers, lost animals, and parks and recreation are other key municipal responsibilities you might bend her ear about.
Catherine McKenna
Catherine McKenna will be able to help you with your passport.
If you want to get a certificate from Queen Elizabeth in honour of your great aunt Millie’s 100th birthday or need help dealing with your Employment Insurance claim, call your MP.
Other topics you might raise with her — passport delays, citizenship and immigration issues, student loan headaches and why we still can’t take more than 100 millimetres of shampoo on an airplane.
Who they are
Catherine McKenney
Catherine McKenney, a candidate in the Somerset ward.
Often seen out and about in her ward (and at Ottawa City Hall) riding a stand-up scooter, she also trains for and competes in ultra marathons. McKenney has three children and lives with her family in the Preston-Somerset area.
The 54-year-old studied social sciences in university, but learned about politics first-hand from some local pros — former councillors Alex Munter and Diane Holmes. She also worked for former NDP leader Ed Broadbent (who preceded Dewar for a term as Ottawa Centre’s MP). Before being elected to city council last year, she was a top adviser to the deputy city manger for operations (her first day on the job coincided with the nasty bus strike in 2008, so she’s got some chops).
Catherine McKenna
Catherine McKenna, newly elected MP for Ottawa Centre
A competitive swimmer from an early age — she made it as far as the Olympic trials for the Seoul Summer Games in 1988 — she still trains with the National Capital YMCA Masters Swim Team. McKenna and her husband have three children and live in the Glebe.
The 44-year-old has practiced law both in Ottawa and Jakarta, Indonesia, and served as a legal advisor and negotiator for the United Nations peacekeeping mission in East Timor. She later co-founded Level (previously known as Canadian Lawyers Abroad), which supports people in the developing world though projects focused on good governance, the rule of law and human rights. She also lectures at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs.
