Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent are to be honoured in a ceremony at the National War Memorial on Thursday, the first anniversary and the site of the Oct. 22 shooting that took the 24-year-old Cirillo’s life.
The 10:30 a.m. memorial service, which will also acknowledge the police, paramedics and security personnel who responded to the events that day as they escalated into an attack and gunfight on Parliament Hill, will feature a 200-person marching contingent, 21-gun salute, CF-18 Hornet flyby, wreath-layings by dignitaries and remarks by Gov. Gen. David Johnston.
Additionally, Dominion Carillonneur Andrea McCrady will perform a special carillon concert from noon til 12:15 p.m., featuring the music she played on Oct. 23, 2014. That program included O Canada, John Courter’s In Memoriam, which was written following 9/11 for victims of terrorism, The Campbells Are Coming, Amazing Grace, Sy Miller and Jill Jackson’s Let There Be Peace on Earth, and Bach’s Dona Nobis Pacem.
Cirillo, a 24-year-old reservist from Hamilton was shot and killed while serving as an honour guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The gunman, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, then stormed Parliament Hill, wounding three before he was killed by security personnel.
Vincent, 53, died just days before after he was deliberately struck by a car in a shopping mall parking lot in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que. The driver, Martin Couture-Rouleau, 25 and, like Zehaf-Bibeau, a recent and extremist convert to Islam, was killed by police following a car chase.
The families of both Vincent and Cirillo are expected to attend Thursday’s ceremony. Stephen Harper was also expected to be there, although his officials hadn’t confirmed this. The ceremony is open to the public.
