An online fund has been set up to lend a helping hand after Wednesday’s devastating fire that destroyed a number of buildings, burned out four popular businesses and left four tenants homeless.

About $3,000 has been raised so far in a Go Fund Me account set up by the owner of Clear Sky Vapes, located just a few doors down from The Daily Grind Café, at the centre of the inferno. The money will be split based on “demonstrated need.”

“While the fire was blazing, we were stuck in our store so we tried to figure out what we could do, so we started a gofundme page,” said Couchman, who sells e-cigarettes. “I’m a survivor of an apartment fire myself so I know what it’s like to lose everything.”

Fire officials have confirmed that roof work being conducted on a building that houses The Daily Grind sparked the Wednesday morning blaze.

The café, on the ground floor of a two-storey house, was connected to a two-storey brick building on the corner of Somerset and Percy streets that housed the Middle East Bakery, Shiraz Food Market and Dark Cloud tattoo parlour, as well as four apartments upstairs.

Damages are estimated to be in excess of $1 million.

Eleanor Riley, one of the many contributors to the help fund, posted a message to go with her donation.

“My heart goes out to all the businesses and apartment owners who were impacted by this fire. Hope you recover and rebuild!”

Couchman says he also allowing the community use his business as a base to drop off clothing donations for the tenants.
