OPP crack down on drivers misusing HOV lanes
We've all seen drivers weaving in and out of the High Occupancy Vehicle lanes in Kanata and this week Ontario Provincial Police are cracking down on drivers who are not following the rules in those lanes.
The lanes have been open for about a year now, but still some drivers haven't gotten the message.
Officers like Const. Rheal Levac see a number of drivers misusing the HOV lanes when they're out on the roads.
"The biggest thing that we have is single occupants using the lane," said Levac. "It has to be two or more occupants in the vehicles to be able to use the HOV lane ... The other thing is that there are certain areas that you can come in and out of the lane, where the lanes become white broken lines. The main travel portion is separated by the white diagonal lines. Sometimes people will come in and out of traffic through the diagonal portion and that's another thing that we have to look at."
Some vehicles are exempt from the two person occupancy requirement, including emergency vehicles, electric cars with green plates, limousines, taxis and buses.
The fine for misusing the HOV lane is $110 and three demerit points.
"The more people use them, the more violations you'll see and as traffic gets backed up in the regular lanes, that's when people will try to use them improperly to get that unfair advantage to get where they're going," said Levac.
OPP will be monitoring the lanes all week. They launched the blitz after receiving a number of complaints from the public.
