A man accused of setting his debilitated mother’s bed on fire and leaving her to die so he could collect the insurance money has been found guilty of murder.
René Goudreau exclaimed “Oh my God” when the jury foreman delivered the verdict Wednesday in a room packed with homicide detectives. Goudreau was convicted of first-degree murder in the November 2012 burning death of his 53-year-old mother, Lucie Goudreau. Lucie Goudreau suffered from multiple sclerosis and used a wheelchair.
The Crown argued that Goudreau deliberately set the fire to collect insurance money and attempted to capitalize on his mother’s immobility – she couldn’t get out of bed without help. The front door of the Woodridge Crescent apartment was blocked by a chair and the patio door – the only other way out of the fire – was locked from the inside with a chain.
An investigator with the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal had testified there were two possible causes of the fire: a smouldering cigarette or an intentional fire.
“This murder was planned and it was deliberate,” Crown Attorney Jason Neubauer previously told the jury.
Goudreau escaped the burning apartment from his mother’s bedroom window.
Security video shows Goudreau in the lobby doing nothing to help his mother as residents called 911. At one point, Goudreau drew a dollar sign in the condensation on the lobby window.
When Goudreau took out insurance policies worth more than $500,000 against his mother’s life, he offered “chilling remarks” that showed he had been planning his mother’s death, Neubauer argued.
“It all comes to me, right?” Goudreau asked to ensure he was the beneficiary. He also asked about the proof needed for an accidental death claim.
Neubauer said the “cold, brutal truth” was that he wanted to kill his mother to collect the insurance money.
“He knew she would die,” Neubauer told the jury. “Fire kills.”
More to come.
