Ottawa and Gatineau police will be out in force for Halloween to keep trick or treaters, and motorists, safe.
Officers from different units will be patrolling Ottawa’s streets in areas popular with kids seeking candy.
“We’re asking drivers to be aware of smaller kids and to have a lot of patience,” said Ottawa Police Service Const. Chuck Benoit.
In Gatineau, officers will be mobile but will also be stationed at different intersections throughout the city between 6 and 8 p.m.
In 2013, they started giving out flashing lights emblazoned with the police logo for parents to hook to children’s costumes to increase visibility for motorists.
Const. Andrée East said it’s “a really, really nice evening. We have the opportunity to interact with the children, but also with the parents.”
She said that the first year they started giving out the safety light, they gave out candy as well. Children loved the lights so much they would often forget to take the candy, she said.
No matter how excited kids are to receive their prize, parents and children must make sure that the police vehicle is stopped, said East, before approaching.
Kids might also want to bundle up – the weather forecast is less ghastly than last year’s breezy minus three, but single digit temperatures are still expected.
To make the best of this Halloween, police ask parents and children to follow the safety tips below.
Top safety tips for little ghouls and goblins
• Make sure drivers can see you — use a light, glow stick, or reflective tape.
• Stay on the sidewalk and cross safely at intersections, look both ways.
• Walk with your friends.
• Save the candy until you get home — it’s hard, but parents should check it first.
• Don’t let your costume trip you up — make sure it fits properly.
• Make-up not masks — so you can see and everyone can see you.
Gatineau police will be stationed at these locations between 6 and 9 p.m.
• Jean-Louis-Morin Park on rue Jean-Louis-Morin
• Parc des Trembles on rue des Trembles
• Parc des Deux-Ruisseaux on rue des Tropiques
• Parc Tecumseh on chemin de la Savane
• Parc des Vignobles before École des Cépages on rue Nobert
• Limbour community centre on chemin Lebeaudy
• Parc Marc-Gosselin on rue de Neuville
