The West Quebec School Board has closed 11 schools, a career centre and an adult education centre “for safety reasons”.

According to the board the following schools and daycares are closed Tuesday: Symmes Jr., D’Arcy McGee, Wakefield, Pierre Elliot Trudeau, Greater Gatineau, Chelsea, Lord Aylmer (Jr. and Sr.), PWHS, Eardley, Buckingham and South Hull, as well as the West Quebec Career Centre and the Hull Adult Education Centre.

The board would not comment on the reason why the schools were closed. Some parents who have been notified of the closures said they were told that it was due to bomb threats.

If true, this would mark the third set of bomb threats made against French speaking schools in less than a week.

The three campuses of the CÉGEP de l’Outaouais – Louis Reboul, Félix-Leclerc and Gabrielle-Roy – and the anglophone Heritage College were evacuated in the middle of the day Friday due to bomb threats, according to Gatineau police. By mid-afternoon, students at the four schools were back in class after police searched the buildings.

Meanwhile, an emailed bomb threat against Ottawa high schools was sent Friday morning to Ottawa police, said Roxanne Deevey, a spokeswoman for the French-language Catholic school board. It appeared to be similar to an email sent to schools on Thursday warning of bomb attacks.

As a result, École secondaire publique Louis-Riel closed for the day on Thursday, students were evacuated briefly from Collège Catholique Franco-Ouest, and police conducted searches as Ridgemont and Gloucester High schools.

Police were back at Franco-Ouest Friday morning searching the building before giving an all-clear by 10:15 a.m., said Deevey.

Police also searched South Carleton high school in Richmond, the target of another threat, but found nothing, said a statement from the Ottawa Carleton District School Board.

The email sent to police Friday repeated the threat made in emails Thursday that five schools would be targeted, said Deevey.

But Friday’s email added that other schools may be targeted as well, she said.
