There’s an odd dearth of metal in venues this week, making room for almost everything else it seems — so unless one needs to headbang, there’s no excuse not to get out and enjoy.
For the sweet, yet moody, indie pop-folk fan, singer-songwriter Kalle Mattson is back home after touring for the past five weeks and performing at the NAC Fourth Stage, before he takes off again on the strength of his recent album, an intentionally pop-ish collection of songs as he chases commercial success, 7:30 p.m., Tickets: $25, but live-rush student tickets will be available on the day. (Nov.5)
For those who want to dance with brass at the end of the week, we have Montreal’s nine-member collective Busty and The Bass — named Canada’s top university band last year — starting the weekend off early on Thursday with electrosoul informed by hip-hop to get you shaking it, with Zoo Legacy and BlakDenim, 8 p.m., Mavericks. Tickets: $10 in advance. (Nov.5).
For more big band sound from young turks, Toronto’s brass-heavy Turbo Street Funk play a more straightforward, jazz-informed funk, as one might imagine by their name, 9:30 p.m., at The Rainbow on Friday, Nov. 6. Tickets: $10. therainbow.ca
Also on Friday, stroll back in time with Daniel Romano who has written new songs with a laid-back, old-style country twang from a time when heartache was heartache, without the need to posture about it on social media — one just needed a backing orchestra and some sequined shirts, 7:30 p.m., NAC Fourth Stage. Tickets: $25. nac-cna.ca
For more modern, alt-country, Canadians Jason Blaine and Tebey — who has written for One Direction, Emerson Drive, Shawn Desman, Pixie Lott, Cher — and Jason Blaine — are joined by by American country MuzikMafia member James Otto on their Three’s a Party tour, playing at 8 p.m. at the Algonquin Commons Theatre, on Monday, Nov. 9. Tickets: $23.50-$28.50. www.algonquinsa.com

UK DJ D.O.D. plays DNA Live’s 4th anniversary party at Barrymore’s.
For those who prefer British electro/house, relative youngster DJ D.O.D., a.k.a, Dan O’Donnell, is playing Barrymore’s fresh from the international party circuit at 10 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6. Tickets at www.dnalive.ca.
For classical and more, see charming and captivating Juno-nominated Canadian violinist Adrian Anantawan, who was born without a right hand, has won numerous awards and played at the White House, perform in a showcase with talented local artists with disabilities, including pianist Matt Savage and soul-folk singer Justin Hines, 6:30 p.m., Shenkman Arts Centre. Tickets: $100 (with $40 tax receipt to benefit local organizations). shenkmanarts.ca
Must see show this week: We’re fans of Ottawa’s sound-makers Pony Girl, who are releasing their sophomore album, Foreign Life, at a concert on Nov. 7 with other local songwriter, Her Harbour. Having only heard two songs, it is hard to comment on the entirety of the release, but this we will say: the pop-rock tunes have the same depth of tone from their previous album, but are more coherently recognisable as “songs” — making us wonder if wide-spread commercial success is on the band’s horizon? (We’ve since been told by the band this was done intentionally to garner more radio play — “we tried to play less notes this time around” — but say the experimental is still to be found on the album, and definitely at their live shows.) See them on on Saturday, Nov, 7, 8 p.m., St. Alban’s Church. Tickets: $10 in advance at www.arboretumfestival.com.
There are two options for Celtic music:
On Friday, good-humoured British folk duo Doug Eunson and Sarah Matthews play traditional English and European dance music — on melodean, a cousin to the accordion, and fiddle — for the first time in Ottawa in an intimate concert, 8 p.m., Rosemount Hall. Tickets: $20. www.ottawacontra.ca (Nov. 6).

Oliver Swain plays Raw Sugar Cafe.
The Sons of Scotland Pipe Band are being joined by Montreal’s Black Watch Band, Gaelic choir Ar N-Oran and singer Cathy Ann MacPhee for a fundraising performance including Highland and step dancing in their annual fundraising concert, suitable for the whole family, on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2 p.m., Shenkman Arts Centre. Tickets: $25. www.sospb.com
On Monday, oddly becoming one of the best nights to see good live shows in Ottawa, self-proclaimed music geek Oliver Swain combines his love for traditional southern folk music with the sense of wide-open Canadian spaces on his latest release, Never More Together!, with fresh, uplifting songs — and several noir folk pieces. He plays with Kirstine St-Pierre and Jill Zmud, 7 p.m., Raw Sugar Café. Tickets: $10 at the door.
Dirty Dishes, a band to make note of, comes to House of Targ from New York City with their rich, garage-rock sound with dream elements and songs that are surprisingly well-crafted, to join local group Bonnie Doon and one-man Connecticut ‘band’ Stove, at the odd time of 9:45 p.m. Stove was Ovlov, but the one-man Connecticut band with revolving members has split up — though how a one-man band can do this remains perplexing — and is exploring more experimental pop-rock sound. Tickets: $8. spectrasonic.com
