Four Quebec teenagers, already facing charges in connection with threats last week against Ottawa-area schools, have been charged with similar charges over threats this week to schools across Quebec.

The Sûreté du Québec said Thursday that acting in conjunction with Gatineau police they had established a link between the four individuals, aged 16 and 17, and the threats made against the Quebec schools on Tuesday.

Earlier this week, the Sûreté charged the teenagers, all from the Wakefield, Chelsea and L’Ange-Gardien areas, with mischief after schools in the Ottawa and Outaouais region were targeted by email threats on Oct. 28 and 29.

The charges relate to engaging in a conspiracy, issuing threats and sending false messages, police officials said, adding that their investigation was continuing and could lead to more arrests.

The emails, suggesting bombs could be planted in schools, prompted the closure or evacuation of dozens of schools across Quebec, including 11 schools, a career centre and an adult education centre administered by the West Quebec School Board.

Police emphasized that they did not find any explosive devices or suspicious packages in any school.

Earlier this week, Pierre Moreau, Quebec’s acting public security minister, described the latter threat as a single email that was directed to80 primary and secondary schools and junior colleges in the province.

The messages were authored by a group that identified itself as Red Sceptre, the minister said, noting that the organization was unknown to police.

According to Moreau, the messages complained about the quality of education and the attitudes of teachers and their union.

Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard had harsh words for the perpetrators.

“It’s a disgusting act, a cowardly act,” he said, promising that those responsible “will be prosecuted to the most severe extent that they can.”

Quebec police warned that making threats, even on the Internet, is a criminal offence, regardless of the intent.

“Any hateful or threatening (message) will be investigated so that its author can be brought before the courts,” police said in a statement.

Police urged parents who want more information regarding their children’s schools to contact their particular school board or institution.

Anyone with information related to such threats was urged to call the Sûreté du Quebéc at 1-800-659-4264.
