For collectors of Canadiana and vintage Hudson’s Bay items, stepping into the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store on Wellington Street West Friday morning was like stepping into a candy store.
“It’s museum quality … it’s beautiful,” said south end resident Heather Gulyas, a frequent shopper at St. Vincent’s.
The store’s social media coordinator Adrian Mulligan said a “record-breaking” number of 60 people lined up outside the door Friday morning — some as early as 4:30 a.m. — to get their hands on clothing and home décor that were part of the specially themed sale.
“I was hoping for a nice Inuit coat and a few Hudson Bay blankets,” said Marcus Kaulback, who lined up at 7:30 a.m. “I’m a little disappointed but I grabbed something else that was fun … the Sir John A. action figure.”
St. Vincent’s holds what it calls a “window blitz” once or twice a month. Each “blitz” has a different theme and employees reveal the items in the window in advance to build excitement for the sale.
On the big day, the sale starts when the store opens at 9 a.m. Once they make it inside, a customer can claim up to three items — whose prices Friday ranged from $2 to $150.
Gulyas said she didn’t get what she originally wanted — the coveted Hudson’s Bay blankets — but she was pleased with what she took away in the end.
“I came out with this amazing original piece from Prince George, B.C. – that’s an oil painting,” she said. “I’m going to give it to my brother for Christmas.”
Gulyas said she now knows to arrive much earlier at the next “blitz.”
St. Vincent employees Calere Boudreau and Alli Asudeh are the architects behind the window displays. Asudeh said it takes them anywhere from three to six months to put a display together since they only use items donated to the store.
“We usually try to mix all our departments … to get a little bit of everything,” she said.
Asudeh said they’ve got two more window blitzes in the works — a pattern-themed display later this month and a Christmas display planned for mid-December.
