Jagruti Seva Sanstha, founded in the 1990s, provides educational, health, micro-financing and counselling support to women and families in Pune, India, where nearly a third of the city’s population of 30 million lives in slums. The three-storey building that houses Jagruti brims with life and bustles with activity in the midst of one of Pune’s 477 slum pockets.

On the first floor are the educational programs, including nursery schools and a daycare centre.

There are educational support classes that address the too-high dropout rate, especially for girls, many of whom are married off at an early age, as well as library facilities.

The health clinic, staffed by qualified women physicians on a volunteer basis, offers desperately needed services ranging from pre- and post-natal care, checkups for pre-schoolers, immunization, anemia eradication, HIV/AIDS awareness and treatment, addiction services and special care for seniors.

A hostel on the second floor of Jagruti is a secure home for 40 young women, many of whom come to the city from rural villages to study or take training. Financial support and hostel accommodation are also provided for excellent students who want to pursue higher education. In 2013, Jagruti added shelter accommodations for women escaping domestic violence to its range of service to the community.

Many westerners visit Pune every year to study yoga at the world-famous Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute. Barbara Young of Pathway Yoga and a couple of other like-minded women from the Ottawa area were inspired by the work of Jagruti Seva Sanstha, and in 2009 started Friends of Jagruti. This registered Canadian not-for-profit organization has the goal of raising awareness and funds to support Jagruti’s powerful grassroots work.

Friends of Jagruti has been hosting a range of activities since its inception in support of Jagruti.

Each fall, a Diwali Fair brings together wonderful Indian crafts, T-shirts, shawls, local art and some lovely pieces created by Jagruti women.

The upcoming Diwali Fair hosted by Friends of Jagruti is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 14 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Pathway Yoga, 346 Richmond Rd., second floor. All are welcome and admission is free. If you would like to learn more about Friends of Jagruti or volunteer to help support Jagruti, please contact us at www.friendsofjagruti.org .
