The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Flyers’ hockey gold medal win at the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland is considered to be one of the greatest events in Canadian sports history. Under the guidance of head coach Frank Boucher, the hastily-assembled team went undefeated during the Olympic tournament en route to winning the gold.

Library and Archives Canada will be displaying and making accessible items belonging to the team’s manager, Alexander Gardner ‘Sandy’ Watson, acquired in August 2015. The material is currently being arranged and described and should be available for public consultation in early 2016.

L to R: Guy Berthiaume, Librarian and Archivist of Canada, Diane Boyce, daughter of coach Frank Boucher, Norman Laplante, Sports Archivist and Jim McAuley, donated the collection. Library and Archives Canada unveiled its acquisition highlighting one of Canada’s greatest Winter Olympics hockey achievements.

The collection provides an important visual and written documentary record of the activities and success of the Flyers.

The collection includes over 200 photographs, telegrams, scrapbooks, programs, medals, and other records documenting the team’s activities and games at the Winter Olympics, their subsequent European tour, as well as the parade and reception honouring them when they returned to Ottawa in April 1948.

Ottawa sports historian Mr. Jim McAuley donated the items which had been given to him by Mrs. Patricia Watson, widow of Sandy Watson.
