Thousands of students descended on the Canadian Tire Centre for “WE Day,” getting ready for a day-long event featuring Canada’s new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and his wife Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau.

The crowd’s also to hear from Simple Plan, Kardinal Offishall and actor/director Henry Winkler.

Winkler, best known as The Fonz on the sitcom, Happy Days, was an early speaker and told the We Day audience that he’s now a grandfather of four.

He confessed that he was a terrible student: bad at math, spelling, reading, history.

“I was good at lunch,” he said.

“You are not defined by school,” Winkler says. “You are defined by your special gift, the greatness inside you. Your job is to dig it out.”

The Trudeaus were a surprise addition to the roster late Monday afternoon.

Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie are scheduled to speak at 1:20 p.m.

They’re We Day veterans: The couple hosted the first We Day in Montreal in 2010 and Trudeau spoke at the 2013 We Day event in Toronto.

They are expected to address more than 15,000 at about 1 p.m. (The public can watch online at youtube.com/user/pmocpm.)

The WE Day event was created in 2007 by Marc and Craig Kielburger, co-founders of Free the Children, which bills itself as a movement of young people leading local and global change.
