A former Citizen executive, a developer, a one-time nurse, a community journalist and a brewer were among the 14 people to be inducted into the Order of Ottawa this year.

Mayor Jim Watson announced the list Tuesday, hours before the ceremony.

“Inductees into the Order of Ottawa are remarkable residents who are being honoured for their service to our city through a variety of professional and civic-oriented endeavours,” Watson said. “I am pleased to celebrate the contributions of these wonderful people who have made a real difference in the lives of others in our community.”

Those who will be invested are:

  • Ben Babelowsky, a well-known artist and executive who worked at the Citizen for 30 years
  • Ron Burke, a fixture on the local music scene for more than three decades
  • Guy Cousineau, who served on the Vanier city council for many years
  • Bill Malhotra, the former president and founder of Claridge Homes
  • Paul Meek, co-owner of Kichesippi Beer Co., one of Ottawa first craft breweries

Gymnast Dasa Lelli, founder of the Kanata Rhythmic Sportive Gymnastics Club, will be presented with the Brian Kilrea Award for Excellence in Coaching. This award that recognizes the contribution of an amateur coach who best exemplifies the qualities of leadership and commitment.

The Order of Ottawa is intended to recognize residents who have made a significant contribution in a professional capacity in many areas of city life, everything from public service and medicine to art, entertainment and sports.

Watson and city council established the civic award in 2012.
