Ottawa residents should prepare for road closures and traffic congestion downtown, closed stores and government services and be ready for the sound of guns and the roar of fighter jets overhead on Remembrance Day.
The ceremonies
The main commemoration begins at 10:30 a.m. at the National War Memorial, with wreath-laying by Gov. Gen. David Johnston, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, Silver Cross Mother Sheila Anderson of Yellowknife, veterans, military officers and foreign diplomats and others. The ceremony includes a 21-gun salute and a low-level fly past by Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18 jets shortly after 11 a.m.
A ceremony at the National Military Ceremony at Beechwood Cemetery begins at 10:30 a.m. with reviewing officer Maj. Gen. Derek Joyce, Deputy Commander Military Personnel Command.
At the Canadian War Museum, a limited number of free tickets are available at 9:30 a.m. for a ceremony in the museum’s Memorial Hall where a beam of sunlight illuminates a headstone representing an unknown soldier at 11 a.m.
Smaller, local commemorations will be held at a myriad of cenotaphs and memorials around Ottawa and in surrounding communities.
Road closures
Roads around the National War Memorial will be closed from 7:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. These include:
Federal offices and services will be closed Nov. 11. Ottawa City Hall, all city service centres and public libraries, and the provincial court houses on Elgin Street and Constellation Drive will also be closed. The City of Ottawa’s 311 service will be available for emergency calls. It is a regular school day for the Ottawa public and separate school boards.
Free parking for veterans
Vehicles with special licence plates issued to veterans by any provincial or territorial transportation ministry are allowed to park for free at paid parking spaces on city streets in the vicinity of the National War Memorial and the City Hall parking garage.
OC Transpo
OC Transpo will operate on a normal service although buses that can safely do so will pull to the side of the road to observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. Veterans in uniform or who wear their medals can ride free on OC Transpo and STO buses, as can their travelling companions. STO buses will operate on a reduced schedule on Nov. 11. Bus detours will occur in downtown Ottawa because of the closed streets.
Retail closures
A City of Ottawa bylaw prohibits many businesses from opening before 12:30 p.m. on Remembrance Day, including those in designated tourist areas such as the ByWard Market. Street vendors are also banned from Wellington and Elgin streets near the war memorial. Smaller grocery stores, pharmacies, gas stations and some other specialized stores are exempt from the bylaw.
