Formal observations of Remembrance Day begin at 10:30 ET in the nation’s capital.

9:52, National War Memorial

Tom Spears writes:

Richard Mathieu made the trip from Deux-Montagnes near Montreal as he does each year. He spent 25 years in the Air Force and served in the Gulf War. He had friends who serves in Bosnia.

“That’s a war they forget, Bosnia. And the Gulf War,” he said. He comes back to the same spot on the east side of the memorial “to pay my respects, my friend. I knew people who died and my uncle used to be with the Fusilliers de Montréal in the Second World War. So I just come to pay my respects.”
Each year he sits in the same spot.

Bob Dewling from St. John’s, Newfoundland, was in Ottawa for a conference and stayed an extra day to attend. He hasn’t been to this ceremony before.

He spent 11 years caring for elderly veterans in long-term care facility “so this is kind of a bucket list thing. My generation never had to serve and I’m certainly grateful for everything they did.”

10:27, National War Memorial

Tom Spears writes:

Gordon Jensen came in black leather motorcycle-style clothes, worn by members of a group of United Nations and NATO mission vets. Jensen is a 30-year naval vet.

About 40 members were at the ceremony.

The group formed in part “to find those that are lost. Some are on the streets, some have been lost by the system. A lot tend to dissociate themselves, not only from the Forces but also from friends and family.”

“The main purpose of the Veterans’ UN group was to bring them back in and give them a sense of community.”

The main commemoration begins at 10:30 a.m. at the National War Memorial. The ceremony includes a 21-gun salute and a low-level flypast by three Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18 jets shortly after 11 a.m.

A ceremony at the National Military Ceremony at Beechwood Cemetery begins at 10:30 a.m. with reviewing officer Maj. Gen. Derek Joyce, deputy commander Military Personnel Command.
