An announcement could be imminent about the fate of the controversial Memorial to the Victims of Communism.
Mélanie Joly, the new minister of Canadian Heritage, will meet with Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson at 3:30 p.m. Thursday to discuss the $5.5-million memorial and other matters.
Watson has been a vocal opponent of the plan to locate the memorial on Wellington Street, between the Supreme Court of Canada and Library and Archives Canada.
Joly also said she’ll be meeting separately with the “president” of the National Capital Commission — presumably a reference either to CEO Mark Kristmanson or board chair Russell Mills — later Thursday.
“I’ll have a chance to answer more questions after those meetings,” she told reporters, adding she would be taking a decision on the victims of communism memorial “shortly.”
The Montreal-area MP, who was given responsibility for the NCC upon her appointment to cabinet last week, also had a breakfast meeting Thursday with Ottawa Centre MP Catherine McKenna, the minister of the environment and climate change.
Joly later tweeted that she’d had a good meeting with McKenna “about the role and principles governing the NCC.”
