Bronson Avenue is down to one lane and reportedly backed up as far as Gladstone Avenue as Airport Taxi drivers staged a surprise protest in Thursday rush hour.

Ottawa police are handing out tickets to Airport Taxi drivers as they protest their lack of a contract by deliberately driving slowly along southbound Bronson Avenue.

The protest, which appears to be part of the unionized drivers’ so-called day of action, began about 3:30 p.m. with cabbies proceeding along the Airport Parkway.

By 4 p.m. they had blocked Bronson at Sunnyside. One lane of traffic is now being let through by police directing traffic onsite, and the Carleton University newspaper The Charlatan reported that the entrance to the university was also blocked.

Some placard-carrying union members walked beside the cars, further impeding traffic flow.

“We are not going anywhere!” drivers posted on their union’s Twitter site. “Rain or not! We are here to stay!”

Police met the drivers near Sunnyside Avenue, outside of Carleton University, and began issuing tickets even as the protest continued, said police spokesman Const. Marc Soucy.

However, no arrests had been made.
