A fundraising effort has begun to help stage a major exhibit marking the contribution of Jews to Canada. The Canadian Jewish Experience: A Tribute to Canada is to be on display in Ottawa in 2017 as part of the 150th birthday of Confederation.

Organizers say they have:

• An exhibition space near Parliament Hill, made available with the help of the National Capital Commission.The exhibition will be on the second floor of 30 Metcalfe St. at the intersection with Queen Street;

• Have developed the display’s core design;

• And have recruited a roster of prominent Canadians, including Rabbi Reuven Bulka, former senior bureaucrat Victor Rabinovitch and Senator Jerry Grafstein, to support and promote the initiative.

They now hope to raise $2.9 million from the Jewish community, government and the private sector to make it all happen, says Tova Lynch, the head of the committee driving the project.

The show is to have nine major themes, including contributions in war and diplomacy, public service, human rights, economic growth, arts, culture and sport, organizers said in a media release. One wall is to feature the photographs of 150 important Jewish Canadians.

The Jewish connection to Canada dates back to the mid-1700s, organizers say.
