For the past 4 years Prof. Hayhoe and Dr. Julia Pan have led a major evaluation of 20 years of Canadian funded university to university linkages in science, agriculture, management, engineering, law, education and minority cultures. Drawing on their forthcoming book, they will present the insights of the leaders of the participating Canadian and Chinese universities on how this Canadian programme contributed to China’s remarkable development, internationalization of Canadian universities, and lessons for the future.
Building on this legacy Minister Counsellor Yang will provide an overview of the current and future state of Canada-China higher education co-operation: including government support for individual participation, student mobility, and jointly run institutions. She will report on current best practices, lessons learned from different co-operative programmes, as well as challenges and potential new initiatives.
Professor Hayhoe has been engaged in Asian Education for more than 30 years. She has been Head of the Cultural Section of the Canadian Embassy in Beijing, and Director of the Hong Kong Institute of Education, and has taught at OISE/UoT periodically since 1986.
Minister Counsellor Yang’s 30 years of public service have been dedicated to education and include work in the Chinese Ministry of Education, two postings in the Chinese Embassy in Canada in 1995 and 2014, founding and subsequently leading the China Scholarship Council for students and faculty. She serves on the Board of the Asia Institute of Technology.
Dr. Julia PAN is an Associate Member of the School of Graduate Studies and a Research Associate in the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto. For two decades, Dr. Pan directed and managed Canadian government sponsored Canada-China University Linkage Programs in the areas of higher education and environmental studies.
