Liberal MP Linda Lapointe dressed up as Chinese person for Halloween

Liberal MP Linda Lapointe has angered members of the Chinese-Canadian community after she dressed up in an ethnic Chinese outfit for Halloween.
Lapointe posted the photo to Facebook on Nov. 1.
The photos were removed shortly after CBC contacted Lapointe about them, the broadcaster reported.
“For me, Halloween has always been a chance to celebrate with family and friends. It is in this spirit that I chose my costume,” Lapointe told CBC News in an email.
“I regret if my choice offended anyone . . . it was not at all my intention [to do so].”
Lapointe told CBC that she bought the outfit on a trip to China.
Photos of the outfit were reposted online by Laurin Liu on Monday, who was ousted by Lapointe in the Montreal riding of Rivière-des-Mille-Îles. Liu, a Chinese-Canadian who won the seat in 2011, wrote on her own Facebook account that the outfit was “unacceptable.
“It made me feel sick to see that the Liberal who beat me in the last election was disguised as a Chinese girl for Halloween this year,” she wrote, alongside Lapointe’s photos.
“I can’t find the words for what I feel right now.”
Liu said that the costume is based on an “ethnic stereotype and are not a joke,” and are quite stigmatizing for the cultural communities referred to.
